Maths children can pick up
A sum on a worksheet stays flat on the page. With Numo 24, children hold the numbers: they place a 7, add a plus sign and a 5, and see the whole equation in front of them. A wrong answer takes one move to fix, with nothing to rub out.
Eighteen cubes carry the numbers 0 to 9, and six more share 13 symbols between them: + − × ÷ = ≠ < > ≤ ≥ ? and a happy and a sad face. Younger children learn what numbers look like and count objects against them. Older children build problems with all four operations, compare numbers and check each other’s answers.
Each cube holds 24 neodymium magnets inside and connects on every face, so Numo 24 works with every other JollyHeap set. A group can build a tower and then count its floors with the same blocks.
A workbook of 15 lesson plans in English comes with the set, so the first session starts from a ready plan. After the lesson the cubes go back in their box.ts, so a setting can add colours and shapes later without replacing what it already has.
What children do with Numo 24
- Recognise numbers: touch the embroidered digits, name them and find the one the teacher calls out
- Count: count a group of objects and put the matching number next to it
- Calculate and compare: build addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and compare numbers with <, > and =
- Use their hands: grip, carry and join the cubes, with hand and eye working together
- Work in pairs: agree who places which block and check the result together
- Build and count: add the Numo cubes to a bigger JollyHeap set and count as they build
